Two Factor Authentication (also known as 2FA) is used to confirm a user’s claimed identity by utilizing a combination of two different components; it’s a type of multi-factor authentication.
It’s advantageous to have 2FA to protect your accounts since access to these accounts will not be granted even if an unauhorzed individual (or system) obtains your user name and password.
Examples of devices used to augment authentication for 2FA include Mobile Devices (getting a supplemental auth code via SMS text), RSA SecureID and passive 2FA utilizing your well known devices and sensors.
In a world where phishing, identity theft and cyber crime is too prevalent, using 2FA is a solid step that could save you a lot of trouble. (Read our blog post for tips to avoid being a victim here.)
